![]() I have often wondered why we don't have a Dallas Green (City & Colour variety) like songwriter here in the UK. Andrew Howie aka Calamateur may be the answer. While Dallas' songs often focus on death and sleep deprivation, Calamateur's have a mellow fatalistic quality which is strangely uplifting in a resolute way. 'Retreat' is typically pessimistic but does have a beautiful vocal duet with Jo Mango. Reminded me of The Unbelievable Truth at their best. In truth Howie's observations on life are those of us all. The ones we brush under the carpet for want of survival. On 'Testimony', the electrics kick in and although the song has more of a commercial slant it lacks the impact of the earlier acoustic numbers. 'Honestly' is similarly arranged but is more powerful and insistent or anthemic even - reminiscent of The February March. Touch My Skin is another supremely crafted song with hook that stays in the memory: 'Ask me my name, I'll tell you each dirty letter, just promise that you'll change it to something better'. A Crumbling Empire rounds of the album nicely. While it may not be the first choice for a motivational session, this album is all the better for it's honesty and 'private' reflection. 4/5
